A Day in the Life of a Summit Salon Academy KC Cosmetology Student

Thinking about getting started with your new cosmetology career? At Summit Salon Academy KC, we’ve helped hundreds of people just like you jumpstart their new careers with exceptional training and support from our salon professionals. When our students first get started, they’re usually curious about what it will be like to be in our program. While everyone experiences life just a little bit different, we’ve put together this “Day in the Life” story so you can have an idea about what your experience will be like in our program.

Hours

Whether you choose to attend full-time or part-time, your instructional week begins at Summit Salon Academy KC on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. If you’re attending full-time, you’ll have instruction from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, with an hour for lunch. Our part-time students have a shorter day on Tuesday through Friday, ending their instruction at 12:30, but on Saturday, they attend a full day along with the full-time students. For full-time students, you’ll learn with a 35-hour week, and for part-time students, your total instructional time each week will be 23 hours. The total program encompasses 1500 hours, which is the required length for courses that allow you to sit for the Missouri state exam for your cosmetology license.

Instruction

All your classes will be taught in English, and what you learn each day varies depending on where you are in the program since it’s divided into two phases:

Phase 1. For the first eight weeks, you’ll be learning topics in Phase 1. In this phase, you’ll spend your days learning core subjects with the basic skills you’ll need to be successful as a cosmetologist. These are the Pivot Point Fundamentals, a program of theory and practical skills that recognizes hair design as fine art. Summit Salon Academy KC has been a member of the Pivot Point program since 1969. The curriculum uses interactive delivery tools that give you an in-depth knowledge of art and design theory and delivers practical exercises that help you learn elements of texture, design, form, and color so you can create an endless variety of hair designs. Phase 1 includes instruction divided into sections for different topics, and each section includes a workshop where you can hone your skills in topics like hair design, skin care, sculpture, perms and relaxers, hair color, and science topics like microbiology, infection control, pH, and haircare product knowledge. Our students enjoy the interactive nature of the instruction in each section and its corresponding workshop as they learn their new skills for success.

Phase 2: For the next 20 weeks you’ll be learning topics in Phase 2. In this phase, you’ll start each day in a theory class from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., Tuesday through Friday, then you’ll participate in a workshop from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. For the rest of your class time on these days, and for the entire class day on Saturdays, you’ll be eligible to provide services for guests in the Summit Salon Academy KC Student Salon! Here’s where you gain practical experience for everything you’ve learned by providing services to real clients, with supervision from an experienced, professional cosmetologist. This real-world experience is where you learn how to communicate with your clients, understand what they want from their service, and deliver great customer service so they leave the salon happy with a look they’ll love. The satisfaction of making a client look and feel great is something that can only be experienced when working with real clients, and it’s something our students repeatedly report as the most amazing part of their learning experience. In fact, for many, that’s what made them choose a career in cosmetology.

Final weeks: For the final weeks of the program, you’ll attend theory class in the mornings until 9:30 a.m. and deliver services to salon clients for the remainder of the day, and all day on Saturday. In this as well as in other phases, you’ll also practice working on mannequins, which helps you prepare for your Missouri Cosmetology and Barber Examiners exam so you can get your cosmetology license. After you’ve completed the program and passed the exam, your days become even more exciting because you’ll be off and running on your new career!
