Tools. It’s the job of every professional cosmetologist and esthetician to properly sanitize tools between clients. The process involves first removing any visible debris, such as pieces of hair, then sanitizing to remove particles we can’t see. The industry standard for sanitation involves soaking tools in a hospital-grade, EPA-approved disinfectant, or using a medical-grade autoclave.

Surfaces. Our students are taught the proper way to clean and disinfect all sinks, bowls, chairs, and other surfaces between clients. There is an important distinction between cleaning and disinfecting, and that is an important part of our student training. Cleaning removes visible dust and dirt as part of normal salon and spa upkeep. Disinfecting removes germs that we can’t see to keep clients safe. All disinfectants used in a salon and spa must be EPA-registered will be clearly labeled as viricidal, fungicidal, and bactericidal. Every hard surface – from the front desk to workstations to restrooms and treatment areas – is cleaned and disinfected to create a safe environment for clients.

Laundry. Washable items are easy to clean and disinfect if the right procedures are followed. Our students are taught that towels and other fabrics must be washed and bleached according to product directions. Bleach is deactivated by hot water, so the proper way to disinfect laundry is by using a bleach product in cold water. This has an added benefit – not only is the laundry properly disinfected in cold water, but using cold water saves electricity, so it’s a more sustainable way to clean and sanitize laundry. The drying cycle is also an important part of disinfecting, so students are taught that all laundry must be dried on high as an extra step to kill all germs.

BARBACIDE®. While many people have never heard of BARBACIDE®, it’s a common product in the salon and spa industry and the first line of defense against germs. BARBACIDE® is an EPA-approved hard surface cleaner that delivers effective disinfection for all hard surfaces in salons and spas. In fact, BARBICIDE® is approved by the EPA for efficacy against COVID-19 and other human coronavirus strains. BARBACIDE® is the industry standard for superior cleaning and disinfection, but it must be used properly to be effective. Our students are taught the correct way to ensure that BARBACIDE® is used regularly throughout their salons and spas to ensure the safety of all their clients.
