Pros and Cons of Being a Hairstylist in 2021

We know you’ve been thinking about it – every time you walk into a salon, you’re wondering whether becoming a hairstylist would be a great career for you. After all, it’s an exciting business where you get to meet new people, build close relationships with your clients, and keep up with all the latest trends! Our cosmetology program at Summit Salon Academy KC is the first step you’ll need to get a new career that you’ll love.

We’ve talked to some of our graduates as well as experienced stylists who have been in the business for years to ask about what they think are the pros and cons of being a hairstylist right now. Here are some of their answers to help you decide whether it’s the right career for you!

Relationships and social interaction

Pro: If you love being around people and meeting new friends and colleagues, being a stylist is definitely for you. You’ll work with a mix of new people who are fun to meet, as well as a steady clientele full of people that you’ll build relationships with over the years. This year, our graduates are telling us that there’s even more appreciation for stylists after everyone experienced lockdowns and restrictions last year.

Con: If you’d rather work alone at tasks every day, then working with lots of people all day long might be a con for you.

Performing a necessary service

Pro: After all the hassle of lockdowns and restrictions last year, people have come to realize that visiting their hairstylist is one of life’s necessities that they can’t give up. That makes for some pretty strong job security both now and in the future. And as the population grows, even more people will need your services.

Con: There really isn’t a con to providing services that everyone needs, because it means you’ll have a great future in your career.

Work-Life Balance

Pro: In most positions as a stylist, you’ll be able to choose the hours that work for you, giving you a more balanced work-life mix so you can spend the time you want to with friends and family. These days, especially after all the restrictions of last year, salon and spa employers have an even higher regard for the value of talented stylists, so you’ll probably find that they’re willing to work to accommodate the schedule you need.

Con: There are some people out there who enjoy working morning to night, and if this sounds like you, the positive work-life balance you’ll experience as a stylist may not be the best fit for you.

Fun, Relaxed Environment

Pro: Everyone goes to a salon or spa because they’re doing a little self-care for themselves, like getting a new hair color or style. As a result, the atmosphere you’ll work in as a stylist is fun and relaxed, so even though you’re working, you’ll be in a place where everyone else is there to relax! This is especially true this year since everyone missed out on so many fun and relaxing aspects of everyday life last year.

Con: Some people like the day-to-day hustle and bustle of an office environment where everyone there is focused on work. If this sounds like you, you might not enjoy the relaxed environment of a salon and spa.
